AB Men’s Volleyball bows to Commerce

THE Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) Men’s Volleyball Team suffered its first loss in the Thomasian Goodwill Games to the College of Commerce (Commerce), 25-23, 20-25, and 23-25 on Monday.

Both teams had a rocky start filled with service errors but solid blocks by Commerce gave them a five-point lead, 10-15, and later came 2 points away from winning at 18-23.

AB came back through a series of sharp spikes by Mon Laurence Madeja that tied the score at 23-23 and eventually won them the frame.

Beginning with a neck and neck rally for the second set, Commerce pulled ahead with four service aces, 24-20. A service error from AB gave Commerce the win.

Nerves choked AB during the third set, leading to several service errors and out-of-bound spikes, all while Commerce stepped up their defenses. The frame ended at 23-25.

AB Men’s Volleyball Team currently stands 2-1 with wins against the College of Science and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

AB coach Scott Subiere chalked the loss to lack of experience, adding that he needs to teach the players to be brave.

“[S]a crucial [moments], tapangan lang nila. ‘Wag silang matakot. Wala ko problema sa skills nila. Kumbaga, mindset nila na kailangan manalo. Hindi ‘yung manalo hanggang salita lang pero wala sa gawa,” he said.

Subiere added that Commerce’s seniority gave them an advantage over AB.

The game was held at the P. Noval Covered Court. F
