AFTER a dismal run last year, the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) regained the top spot in this year’s Pautakan individual category and placed third in the group category.

AB’s Augustus Botrous Guco emerged as the victor in the individual category after beating Joseph Mari Aranzaso from the Alfredo M. Velayo-College of Accountancy (AMV) during the finals clincher round.

Earning a total of 110 points by the end of the average round, Guco was the top scorer during the first two rounds of the finals.

Guco and Aranzaso tied at 190 points at the end of the difficult round, forcing a clincher round that decided AB’s win.

Reginal Pasao from the Faculty of Engineering (Engineering) went home as second runner-up in the individual category with 185 points.

Meanwhile, the AB team composed of Guco, Imee Camille Advincula, Jezarree Corpuz, Leif Arden Fraginal, Marc Gjeremie Cheung, Rozell Joshua Ines, and Dexh Davey Tan climbed a place higher than last year and placed as second runner-up in the group category with 160 points.

Defending champion Engineering settled for a bridesmaid finish with 210 points while AMV claimed the group category championship with 235 points.

During the finals difficult round, AB correctly answered only two questions each worth 20 points, adding 40 points to their average round score of 120.

Hall of Famer AB has already won eight championships in Pautakan, including a five-year winning streak from 2002 to 2006.

Now on its 40th year, the Varsitarian-organized Pautakan is the longest-running intercollegiate quiz competition in the country. ANGELIQUE ANNE F. TORRES
