AFTER A one-year stint with the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, former UST Tiger Cub Nickson Andwele Cabañero has made his way back to the Tigers’ lair.
The younger brother of former King Tiger Nic Cabañero left the Espana-based university last year after facing academic hurdles.
Tiger Cubs head coach Manu Iñigo confirmed to The Flame that the 6-foot guard has been training with the team since graduating junior high school back in March.
“Andwele’s been a big part of our team before, so he pretty much knows what we want. He’s a hard worker and knows how to win, so I’m sure that he’ll be a big help to us,” Iñigo told The Flame on Saturday, May 23.
“We’re just happy that he’s back and we’ll be able to help him be more ready for a higher level of basketball,” he added.
During his lone season with the Squires, Cabañero averaged 3.3 points, two rebounds and an assist in limited minutes across 15 games en route to Letran’s championship run.
The 16-year-old also saw international experience last September, suiting up for Gilas Pilipinas Youth in the FIBA U16 Cup, notching seven points, four rebounds and two assists per contest.
Cabañero last suited up for the Gilas Youth squad in the FilOil Preseason Cup, where he was cut from the final roster after two games.
The Cebu-native is eligible for two seasons with the Tiger Cubs, where he is expected to fill the void left by the departures of star players Joaqui Ludovice, Charles Esteban and Kirk Cañete. F
